Nice Treat, November 10, 2011

I found these food-themed short stories a really nice treat. Not only are they quick reads — some are as short as two pages — but there is always a culinary lesson to be learned amid a cast of eccentric and often obsessed characters. The author’s extensive background in travel, gourmet cuisine and scholarship combines to give each story a distinct, often unpredicted flavor.

Marty Martindale’s aptly titled new book, Short Orders:  Food Stories and Travels, is a delicious smorgasbord of trips, tastes and tall tales – 63 of them, all about people and their food.

The brief, but satisfying, stories offer tempting glimpses of interesting places, some real, some imaginary, some exotic, some down-homey. Food facts and fiction are expertly blended, folded and whipped together with Martindale’s quirky sense of humor evidenced in each piece.

Review from Ann Hattes

Some of us eat to live, others, live to eat, “but no matter food and eating are very central to our existence,” states Marty Martindale, founder of the website www.FoodSiteoftheDay.com, ongoing since 2001, now http://www.foodsitemagazine.com.

Now she has written Short Orders: Food Stories and Travels (Author House), 63 very short stories, slices of life to savor about people and their food. Combing humor with her social/cultural anthropology background Marty educates as well as entertains with her “mind snacks” like Haggis embarrassment, Coconut lifeline, Subway refreshments, Everglades dining and Doggie-bag indexing.

As a fitting conclusion to a festive family feast, consider curling up  by the fireside with Marty’s anecdotal tales about carvin’ the bird, Mr. Chin’s egg rolls, and Thomas Jefferson, the foodie president.

Whether you’ve got a deliberate, focused personality or an attention deficit disorder, this book is going to be a simple, amusing read. Some stories are charming, others disastrous, some romantic, others bittersweet. But there’s no tinge of snark or snideness, just quirky writing that’s fun to read.

Marty is sometimes quirky which comes out in the book in a delightful way. It has humor, characterization, worldly effects and, of course, food. She is a Website Food Host, the site being[...]. She has traveled the world and found anecdotes from everywhere and anthing you can imagine about food. Her site is full of indexing food sites from around the globe. She has been a food writer for magazines for many years.
